Servando (social package)

Servando is a 14 year old boy with Autism and extreme challenging behaviour.
He is an only child of parents who are elderly. Father has health issues and finds Servando extremely demanding. However, Servando is very precious to them as they had lost an older son who had been killed in Brazil.
Focused Healthcare have been involved with the family since June 2014 when Servando was excluded from school.
Focused Healthcare was asked to provide a bespoke package to support Servando during his period of exclusion supporting him in accessing social activities and provide a programme to support his re integration into the education system. It was essential for this to succeed as the only other option was going to be residential care. Both parents were resisting this, wanting Servando to remain in the family home.
Focused Healthcare were successful in providing a two to one care package ( male and female carer ) who assisted him in personal care, empowering him in choices using a picture book of activities to do. This was provided from June until September when a reintroduction to Education commenced. His carers were essential in this being successful providing continuity, consistency and trust. They escorted him to school (Servando resisted the school bus) in a private taxi and helped integrate him from attending school two hours a day to full time education.
It was a rocky road, in particular when we had to introduce a new carer and when Servando changed class with a new teacher as change is a huge challenge for him. However, we continue to support Servando and his family during school hours, after school and at weekends and this package has prevented him going into residential care keeping him home with his parents.
