Following a catastrophic acquired brain injury aged 3, Bethany was left profoundly disabled.
Her injury had profound impact on her parents and siblings who were devastated about her injuries. One of Bethany’s sibling was severely autistic so the family already faced many challenges to ensure his needs were met. However, all were keen to get Bethany home and our journey with the family began.
Our involvement began after she was an inpatient for six months at a leading paediatric unit. Bethany has a care team of 8 carers (four of whom have been caring for Bethany since her discharge from hospital) who are well known to the family and provide family centred care resulting in a consistent professional partnership. This enables the family to feel confident and reassured. Indeed, as well as providing clinical care, Focused Healthcare is a family advocate ensuring all aspects of psycho-social-emotional support are delivered.
Focused Healthcare continues reviewing and amending care plans ensuring Bethany’s ever changing care needs are met. Paramount in this is to ensure Bethany has the optimum support to grow and develop. Sensory play is an essential part of the delivery of care and an intensive programme is in place for carers to follow. Focused Healthcare Clinical Nursing Team work in partnership to ensure Bethany has the optimum in stimulation.
Bethany’s Clinical Nurse Manager has been invaluable in ensuring liaison with all professionals involved in Bethany’s care and her family needs.
