Emily was a 6 year old girl diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour.
Emily had a 2 year old brother and her family wish was for her to remain at home with Nursing support from Focused Healthcare.
Focused Healthcare became involved with Emily when there were no further treatment options available and Emily was at the end of her life. All Focused Healthcare Clinical Nursing team are competent in T34 syringe driver management essential for children who are end of life at home so that they have the appropriate pain relief to ensure their comfort.
Focused Healthcare liaised closely with the palliative care team at GOSH and the Children’s Community Nursing team. Focused Healthcare also provided an on call service from 17.00 to 09.00 Monday to Friday and 24 hours at a weekend as secondary carer. This was escalated to primary and secondary on call due to capacity issues of the CCG and local hospice support.
Senior staff were a constant support to Emily and her family and ensured her dignity was maintained and her pain was managed. This allowed her to pass away in the arms of her Mum and Dad with the rest of her family present to the echos of Frozen being played in the background (Emily’s favourite Disney songs).
